The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s first expansion revealed

Look, other than the Pokémon games, I’ve mostly stayed clear of anything to do with Nintendo during the last decade or so. Not because I have anything against the company or anything, I’ve just rarely been drawn to any of their consoles or games. But I’ve got to say, if there’s one game that could convince me to buy a Switch, it’s probably Breath of the Wild.

Speaking of Breath of the Wild, Nintendo recently detailed its first expansion dubbed “Expansion Pass DLC Pack 1,” and it looks pretty great.

A post on the game’s official website gives us a quick look at what’s to come in the expansion, due “this summer” (that’s winter for us), including a new challenge, two new modes, and some useful new equipment and fashionable armour.

First to be detailed is the Trial of the Sword which will see players facing “an onslaught of enemies, one wave after another”. So essentially a horde mode.

“Link starts the challenge without any equipment or weapons. When all the enemies in a room are defeated, Link proceeds to the next. Clear all the trials (about 45 rooms in total), and the true power of the Master Sword will be awakened, and it will be in its glowing powered-up state while usable.”

The first new mode is called Hero’s Path, and it’s billed as a “new map feature [that] shows the path Link has walked through Hyrule from the last 200 Hours of gameplay”. This lets players see all the areas they’ve explored, and more crucially the areas they haven’t. Next up is Hard mode, which will grant enemies the ability to slowly regenerate health, and all enemies will be “powered up by one level”. Oh, and there might also be treasure chests “in the sky” for some reason.

As for the new equipment, here’s the full lineup.

  • Travel Medallion: Somewhere in the world, there is a chest with a Travel Medallion inside. When you use this, you can register your current location as a fast travel point on the map. You can only register one location using the Travel Medallion.
  • More Armor: There are 8 treasure chests placed around Hyrule containing armor themed after previous The Legend of Zelda titles. Watch for tips as to the whereabouts of these chests as you travel around Hyrule.
  • Korok Mask: The Korok Mask is also hidden in a treasure chest somewhere in the world. While wearing this mask, it shakes whenever Link is near a hidden Korok location. There are 900 Koroks hiding in Hyrule, so this should help you discover quite a few of them.

DLC 1 will release as part of the game’s expansion pass.
