Possible leak reveals Assassin’s Creed: Origins, takes franchise to Egypt

After a year’s sabbatical, the Assassin’s Creed franchise may be making a return. Maybe. Possibly. This isn’t confirmed yet, so keep that pinch of salt handy, but…

An image posted to Reddit and Imgur is making the rounds, and it’s supposedly an off-screen picture of the new game in action. If true, the next game will be called Assassin’s Creed: Origins, and will transport players to ancient Egypt.

According to Eurogamer, the Reddit post came from a user called “shoutouttoashraf”, potentially a reference to Black Flag‘s director Ashraf Ismail. The image is blurry, but you can clearly make out a figure with a bow, quiver of arrows, and a shield piloting a small sail boat. There’s a familiar quest marker floating nearby, and text in the top-right tells the player to “Assassinate the Crocodile” and “Follow Shadya to Khenut’s Villa”. After some Googling, I found that Khenut was a Queen of Egypt during the Fifth Dynasty, which means the game could be set sometime before 2345 BC. This would make it the earliest in the Assassin’s Creed timeline, giving rise to speculation that Origins will function as a prequel.

Of course, none of this is official yet. It’s worth noting that Eurogamer has been in contact with three sources that have confirmed this, and they were right about God of War 4 when that leaked.  If this is true, then ancient Egypt would be an interesting setting and era to explore, especially if players learn a few Egyptian swear words. With Ubisoft’s E3 2017 conference just around the corner, it’s likely we’ll see if this is real or not.
