Okay, not “we”. Them. I’m busy eating tipsy tart for lunch because I’m a grownup and I can. But the protagonists of Luc Besson’s (other) psychedelic sci-fi space opera Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets had better get busy sorting this out, because it’s Friday tomorrow, and the end of everything would be very inconvenient for my weekend plans.
Based on Pierre Christin’s French graphic novel series Valérian and Laureline, this $200 million (!) film stars Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne as special operatives for the Terran Galactic Empire.
“Under assignment from the Minister of Defense, the two embark on a mission to the astonishing city of Alpha—an ever-expanding metropolis where species from all over the universe have converged over centuries to share knowledge, intelligence and cultures with each other,” reads the film’s blurb. “There is a mystery at the center of Alpha, a dark force which threatens the peaceful existence of the City of a Thousand Planets, and Valerian and Laureline must race to identify the marauding menace and safeguard not just Alpha, but the future of the universe.”
