I slowly started getting back into Niantic’s disappointment simulator recently, mostly because the newly added raid battles and reworked gym mechanics are totally badass, and man, am I glad I did. The latest updates and tweaks to the game are great, but it’s all been leading up to something more spectacular. Legendary, even.

Niantic took to the game’s official blog to announce that yes, legendaries are finally happening, but only if we all work together, or at least everyone attending Pokémon Go Fest in Chicago.

“On July 22, thousands of Trainers in Grant Park for Pokémon GO Fest and the millions of others around the world will be working together to unlock in-game bonuses for the entire Pokémon GO community. If they manage to catch enough Pokémon during the Pokémon GO Fest Challenge Windows, the first Legendary Pokémon will be revealed in Grant Park. If the Trainers in Chicago succeed in defeating the Legendary Pokémon, that Pokémon will start appearing in Raid Battles around the world, after Pokémon GO Fest.”

Here’s what Niantic imagines all of that will look like.

If the players in Chicago succeed, the rest of us can expect to see “Legendary Eggs appearing at Gyms”. After being taken down, players will get the chance to capture the legendary pokémon. If you’re worrying that gyms will then be packed with ultra-tough legendaries, don’t sweat it. While these pokémon can be used to take down gyms, “they’re not willing to leave their Trainer’s side, so they can’t be left to defend Gyms”. So that’s cool.
