Atomega makes playing with blocks cool again

The childlike joy of playing with blocks is something most of us can relate to, but unless you frequently “borrow” your kid’s toy chest, it’s likely something you stopped doing a long time ago. Perhaps you wouldn’t have though, if playing with blocks meant assembling giant cubic lifeforms to duke it out in online FPS arenas. If you’re wondering what that’s like, Ubisoft’s Atomega is launching soon to show you.

In development at Reflections (whose previous work includes Grow Home and Grow Up), Atomega is a multiplayer shooter for eight players set in a single arena. The game takes place during the end of the universe, as a group of blocky “Exoforms” battle each other “for fun and dominance”. Players enter the fray as a single-block Atom, and must acquire more blocks and mass to evolve through different stages, ending in the colossal Omega form.

Each phase of evolution has different strengths, weaknesses, and strategies. The tiny Atom is super nimble, while the Omega balances overwhelming firepower with being the largest target on the map. The winner is determined by a points system, where points can either be collected from destroying other players, or by harmlessly picking them up on the map.

Here’s a stylish trailer, complete with flashing lights and techno soundtrack.

Atomega launches on 19 September, exclusively for PC. Check it out on Steam, in case you want to add it to your wishlist.
