After years of cosying up to PlayStation types and treating everyone else like lepers, thatgamecompany has announced that their next project will be a strictly mobile affair. They’ve called it Sky, and in keeping with their affinity towards excluding large portions of the gaming public, it will be exclusive to Apple devices at launch.
If the game’s title gives little away, the gameplay trailer and developer commentary over on thatgamecompany’s official website do little to remedy that. Given the opportunity to peel away some of the ambiguity, we’re told that Sky is “a game specially created to be played, and shared, among loved ones and family”. They go on to say that “if you can imagine the delight of visiting a theme park where lasting memories are made, we envision Sky will sometimes feel like that”.
There’s lots of talk of emotion and sharing and giving.
Vague concepts aside, Sky does look delightful – it’s lush and distinctly thatgamecompany-ish. Expect to see it lighting up your App Store later this year, primed for iPhone, iPad and Apple TV.
