Only just over a year since launch and three months into its inevitable reinvention as a free-to-play thing, Gearbox’s mostly unimpressive hero shooter is getting one more update and that’s that, the developer has confirmed, with the game’s team moving onto the studio’s “highly anticipated but unannounced game” that’s probably, maybe, but actually almost definitely Borderlands 3 and everybody knows. Battleborn‘s servers will remain online (… for now), but presumably only because turning off life-support for the terminally ill makes everybody feel awkward.

“As of this week, there will be no more Battleplans and there is currently no planned content after the Fall Update. Details of any future changes or news will be made on our forums or through social media, so keep your radars on,” creative director Randy Varnell explains. “Never fear! Battleborn is here to stay. Nothing is changing with Battleborn, and the servers will be up and active for the foreseeable future.”

Until a compassionate nurse gently suffocates it with a pillow sometime in the night, anyway. Or they decide to add a PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds mode.

Launched in May 2016 to somewhat mixed reviews, I think Battleborn‘s limited content and questionable presentation choked on Overwatch‘s glitz ‘n’ glitter several weeks later, despite only superficial similarities. Overwatch‘s matchmaking worked, though.
