The Xbox One X has gone from “one day it shall be mine” to “holy teraflops, it’s almost here!”, and I can feel the excitement. And the gaping hole in my bank balance. Anyway, with release day in sight, Microsoft has detailed the enhancements we can expect from the Xbox One X version of Gears of War 4.
The obvious headliner is the “true 4K experience”, with Visuals Rendering Mode spitting out Gears at 3840×2160, using new Ultra Quality Textures. They claim that it will look noticeably better on a normal 1080p screen too. It’s not all about ridiculous resolutions, though – Performance Mode means up to 60fps at 1080p in Campaign and Horde modes, including higher resolution textures while retaining some of the enhancements from Visuals Mode too.
Then there’s the whole HDR thing, bumping up contrast between light and dark… this sort of thing is a hard sell unless you see it with your own eyes, but I’m sure it’s going to be delightful. Your ears are in for a treat too, with Dolby Atmos Audio support, should you have a Dolby Atmos enabled setup at home.
The rest of the visual enhancements are there to make a pretty game even prettier, including the following:
- Enhanced Light Shafts
- Dynamic Shadows
- Increased Draw Distances
- Superior Reflections
- Enhanced Character Textures
