Before you run out and tell all your friends, let’s have another look at that headline. “Fastest selling Mario game”. That’s not the same as “top selling Mario game”, okay? Also, because Western civilisation is obsessed with the US, when we see headlines saying “fastest selling of all time”, don’t forget that we’re talking about US sales figures specifically here. Yes, North American figures do tend to lead where the rest of the West follows, but it’s still worth keeping in mind.
Statistical cynicism aside, Nintendo’s Super Mario Odyssey has hit 1.1 million sales in the US in three days. That makes it the fastest selling Mario game, as well as the fastest selling Nintendo Switch game too. It’s hardly surprising though – have you seen the scores this thing is raking in? Last time I checked it was sitting with a Metacritic score of 97. And, yes, I know that Metacritic scores aren’t everything, but you can’t deny that they tell us something.
While we’re keeping score, let me just point out that the NES version of Super Mario Bros. sold around 40 million copies, while the franchise as a whole is edging towards the 590 million mark. Personally, I couldn’t be bothered. If I wanted to eat mushrooms, grow three times my size and stomp through a magical kingdom, I’d be off to a trance festival.[via Polygon]
