The latest Tomb Raider trailer gives some context to all the leaping, shooting and explosions we saw in the previous footage.

The first official Tomb Raider trailer was basically one long video game cutscene and had little of substance. Thankfully the second trailer has arrived to show us that this reboot has more to it than wide angle shots of Lara Croft leaping across chasms. There’s an actual story here, and it’s riddled with tombs and guns and lost fathers and global genocide.

Oh, don’t get me wrong, there is leaping and a lot of hanging from things, and a fair number of stern looks being shot between good guys and bad guys, but at least there’s a plot and character development, and all that. Alicia Vikander’s Lara seems to have both a strength and a vulnerability about her, in stark contrast to the comic book stylings of Angelina Jolie’s take on the role from the original films. Going by what we’ve seen so far, it also looks like the new Tomb Raider has a more aggressive, more serious tone which mirrors the evolution of the game franchise.

Tomb Raider will be leaping into cinemas (and then probably dangling dangerously from the rafters) on March 16.
