Arnold Schwarzenegger is set to play the lead in Outrider, an original Western series in development by Amazon
Amazon is working an original Western-themed series starring Arnold Schwarzenegger as a ruthless Federal Marshall accompanying a deputy on the trail of a notorious criminal in the depths of Oklahoma. Besides his leading role, Arnie will be executive producing the project too, alongside Mace Neufeld, with Trey Callaway and Mark Montgomery taking care of writing duties.
Schwarzenegger’s backstory has him immigrating to the US from Europe as a child, neatly sidestepping the oddity of an Austrian accent on the wild frontier. Then again, Christoph Waltz’s utterly brilliant Dr. King Schultz slotted perfectly into Django Unchained’s cowboy narrative, and his accent was as German as a spoonful of sauerkraut down your lederhosen. Set in the 1800s, Outrider is “a dark and dangerous tale”, says a exclusive Deadline report, in a story where “a series of unpredictable surprises will blur the line between good guys and bad”.
It’s going to be interesting to see Arnie doing traditional script-based television after his stint on The Celebrity Apprentice, where he replaced POTUS 45, Donald Trump. It sounds like Outrider is still in the early stages of development, so there’s no mention of an Amazon debut date just yet.
