I just saw a tweet which made me do a little Twi’lek striptease dance on my dining room table. What was so exciting that it prompted me to do my best Mos Eisley shuffle? Only the news that Jon Favreau will be taking the role as both executive producer and writer for a live-action Star Wars series coming to Disney’s streaming service.
It’s impossible to ignore the role that Jon Favreau played in crafting the look and feel of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in its early days. Before Iron Man, Marvel movies were an unshapen, dreary mass, kind of like DC movies (LOL, I kid, they’re grand). And now we have the Avengers, Thor: Ragnarok, Black Panther and all the rest – a lot of what we now expect from Marvel movies traces back to what Favreau’s Iron Man brought to the genre.
And now he has signed up to bring Star Wars to Disflix or whatever Disney will be calling its version of Netflix.
“I couldn’t be more excited about Jon coming on board to produce and write for the new direct-to-consumer platform,” said Kathleen Kennedy, Lucasfilm president, as part of the official announcement. “Jon brings the perfect mix of producing and writing talent, combined with a fluency in the Star Wars universe. This series will allow Jon the chance to work with a diverse group of writers and directors and give Lucasfilm the opportunity to build a robust talent base.”
We don’t have a release date, or hints of story line, or anything else, so for now let’s just be happy that such a thing exists in concept, and we’ll surely see something more of it soon.
