Today we’re treated to a release date announcement for The Banner Saga 3, the final episode in the exquisite Viking-inspired, turn based strategy game from Stoic Studio. I’ve been tweeting at them, emailing them, and popping messages in little bottles for months now, begging for a release date, and it seems to have paid off at last. The Banner Saga saga reaches its climax on PC, Mac, Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on 24 July.
That’s a digital release across the board, although there will be a physical trilogy bundle for both Xbox One and PlayStation 4. It was revealed last month that the first two chapters will also be released on Nintendo Switch, and you would imagine that would happen either before or alongside the release of The Banner Saga 3, but that is yet to be confirmed.
A pre-order few bonuses have also been shown off, including a Dredge ally to add to your party, along with the unique skills and buffs he brings to the battlefield, as well as an orchestral overture by Grammy nominated composer Austin Wintory. Don’t expect it to be chipper, happy music, though – the score for the saga so far has been beautiful but terribly sombre.
Without getting into spoiler territory, there were a lot of unanswered questions left dangling at the end of The Banner Saga 2, and those who have been following this long, tangled narrative will be looking forward to gain some kind of closure. In just over three months from now we head back into the fray, and I couldn’t be more excited.
