BioShock is, historically, a franchise so highly respected that people talk about it in hushed tones and get all sincere for the moment. That respect was tarnished slightly after BioShock Infinite, but the first game and its sequel live on as modern classics. It’s been five years since we had a new BioShock to make us all wobbly with excitement, but it looks like that is set to change.
Hidden deep inside a recent Kotaku article discussing Mafia 3 developer Hangar 13, its past, and the plans for the future, was a little gem of information regarding BioShock, just dropped nonchalantly in the middle of the report.
“Some went to other game companies,” reads the Kotaku piece, referring to how the developer lost staff after Mafia 3 didn’t meet publisher 2K’s expectations. “Others moved to the top-secret studio next door to work on an unannounced new BioShock game.”
A new BioShock game. That’s big news. Important news. You can’t just leave it dangling in the middle of a sprawling article about something else entirely. The report goes on to reveal that the upcoming BioShock title is currently code-named Parkside, and its secrecy is of such importance that the team working on it wont even speak to their Hangar 13 colleagues about it.
Many felt that the franchise lost its way somewhat with BioShock Infinite, but the first two games earned praise across the board. It will be interesting to see what this secret development bunker has planned for what’s coming next, but I’m guessing it will be a while before we hear anything official on the matter.
