I recently saw a photo of a hedgehog without its spikes. Bristles. Whatever you call the pointy things that cover a hedgehog. It looked something like a depressed scrotum, and it’s made it hard to think of Sonic with the same pride I usually attach to the legendary blue streak. But that’s unimportant right now. What’s important is that Sega has given us a release date for Sonic Mania Plus on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Switch.

Sonic Mania Plus, for those of you who don’t keep a finger pressed against the pulse of the Sonic world, is Sonic Mania, plus more. The “more” in this instance? Two additional characters, Mighty the Armadillo and Ray the Flying Squirrel, reworked game modes, and a slick physical release with holographic packaging, an art book, and a retro Genesis-style reversible cover. But that means you’ve got to get off the couch to put the disc in. Which, let’s be honest, is never fun. So we’ll just stick to the digital copy, then.

It’s coming to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One on 17 July, and if you already own the original game you can upgrade to the Plus version at a heavily reduced price.
