This week’s Mosh Pit was written with feverish anticipation of the coming long weekend, because OBVIOUSLY it’s the opening week for Avengers: Infinty War. Duh! We’re allowed to get a bit distracted whenever another MCU movie arrives on our shores. This week we take a quick peek at Samsung’s new 970-series SSD family, the critically-acclaimed A Quiet Place, which is also showing this week, and some sweet merch you can buy for yourself, your friends, your mom, or anyone really because it’s that stylish.

Also, quick PSA: don’t forget that Tuesday is also a public holiday! If you end up walking into work and wonder why everyone else is gone and start panicking because this is how zombie movies start, well… go home and play something. You’ve earned it. It is Freedom Day after all.

Avengers Infinity War (2018)

Avengers: Infinity War is releasing country-wide as you read this, and it just so happens that today is also A PUBLIC HOLIDAY. Infinity War is the culmination of the second round of character arcs in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, bringing together all the Avengers once more for an epic battle against Thanos, the son of Eternal and Deviant parents with a penchant for power and the shiny Infinity Stones.

It’s showing in 3D basically everywhere, but if you prefer the 2D version you might want to hang back on seeing this for about two weeks. Book your tickets through Ster-Kinekor or Nu Metro.

Samsung 970 PRO and EVO

Launching this week is Samsung’s new SSD 970 EVO and 970 PRO, two of the baddest NVMe drives on the block. These are refreshes of the previous 960-series family from Samsung, and only come in the M.2 format with up to 2TB of drive space. These are ideal for high-performance applications like video editing and scientific computing, if you need that kind of endurance, but they’re also great replacements for that slow slab of spinning rust sitting in your computer. Compared to the previous generation, the 970 EVO picks up an additional two years warranty with up to five years of coverage, and the 970-series generally is ahead of the 960-series drives by about 10% in performance benchmarks, according to testing by PC Perspective.

In other news, Samsung’s 960 EVO and PRO drives will be in sale fairly soon to clear out old inventory, so this is a good time to start looking out for sales at your favourite retailer.

A Quiet Place (2018)

If you’re not watching Avengers this weekend, maybe a horror movie would be up your darkened alley? A Quiet Place is an award-winning, critically acclaimed film from Paramount Pictures starring Emily Blunt and John Krasinski. To survive, a family of four needs to be extremely quiet and not make any sound, or else monsters which rely on sound to hunt their prey will find them and most likely tickle them to death (fairly certain there’s death involved here though, the tickling part is just guesswork on our part). The movie launched worldwide on 3 April 2018 and made its way to our cinemas really quickly, and it’s had such an overwhelming response that Paramount has announced that a second and third film will be commissioned to complete the series and flesh out the world.

A Deadpool head that you can use (for literally anything, we guess?)

Deadpool is cool, man. But do you know what’s even cooler? A Deadpool head. On your desk. You can do all the things Deadpool would do with a replica of his own head on a desk. You can talk to it, put hats on it, make it your headphone stand, you can take it outside for walks and adventures, you can stick a Raspberry Pi and a speaker in it and make it repeat witty one-liners at regular intervals. Deadpool won’t judge, he’s a cool guy. You can get your own from Numskull designs for £39.99 excluding shipping, with deliveries starting 9 May 2018.

Shirts, hoodies, keychains, and dresses, OH MY!

Megarom has partnered up with game publishers to bring some very cool nerdy clothing to local retailers. If you head into your local Musica and BT Games stores, you can find some stylish apparel from the Legend of Zelda, Super Mario, Assassin’s Creed, and God of War franchises that tie in to recently released games like Breath of the Wild, or the critically acclaimed dad simulator with a viking theme and some melee combat inspired by Dark Souls. We’re big fans of that assassin’s hoodie and bracelet, by the way, so if you want to buy one for us all we won’t say no.

You can also find stock of these awesome clothes online at Takealot.com, Loot.co.za, Game4U, Raru, and Delta5.
