Google’s new Duplex AI assistant can book appointments for you, and is totally not terrifying
Do you remember the first time that you started filling in your name for an online form and Google asked if you would like to auto-fill? Wasn’t it magical? All those precious seconds saved, allowing you to move on to more important things…
Well, Google likes that you liked that feature, so they’ve steadily worked on more and more solutions to make your life easier and more automated. And last week they finally unveiled something truly awesome and also terrifying – a conversation between its new Duplex AI and a real life human being, in which the AI made a hair salon appointment and sounded totally human.
That’s not millennial hyperbole, either. Presented at Google’s recent I/O conference in California, Duplex is designed to sound entirely human, and perfectly mimics natural speech patterns in order to schedule your life, so you don’t have to. But, don’t fret about the AI apocalypse quite yet! According to CEO Sundar Pichai, Google is “still developing this technology”, and expect to roll it out to a small test group in the coming weeks. In the meantime, you can read more about it on the company’s blog.
