Up next, firefighting robo-snakes

Because everything in Japan has to come back to tentacles, students at the Tohoku University and Hachinohe Institute of Technology are developing the DragonFireFighter, a kind of robotic snake… thing that can put out fires.

The machine is incredibly slow and loud, but when you consider that this is essentially a science project by a bunch of varsity students, it’s pretty damn impressive. The firefighting robo-snake moves by propelling itself upwards through water jets, which are presumably designed to assist in putting out fire as it goes – though it requires an operator to move it forwards and sideways. This is seriously cool stuff and if developed further, will be invaluable in fighting fires in hard-to-reach places. Check out the video below.
