If you’ve been to rAge, you’ll know that the ever-expanding local cosplay community consistently delivers one of the show’s greatest spectacles. Dozens of people spend months designing and crafting truly incredible, eye-catching costumes based on characters from their favourite anime, video games, movies and other media, and then showcase their hard work for all of rAge to see throughout the nerdiest weekend of the South African year.
rAge is one of the few places you can go if you wanna see Spider-Man dive into fake-battle with a Warcraft-ian dwarf, and every year we’re amazed by the overwhelming level of skill, dedication and love that South African cosplayers pour into their hobby.
The fine folks over at GES also host their annual Cosplay Contest at rAge, and rAge 2018 will once again see the country’s top cosplayers being rewarded for their outstanding efforts. If you’re interested in cosplay and want to get in on that action, read on!
The Cosplay Contest is set to happen on the Saturday and Sunday of rAge 2018 (i.e. 6-7 October). This year, GES is adding new divisions to push local cosplayers to reach even higher, and in addition to the previous divisions, this year’s Cosplay Contest will see the addition of the Needlework and Armour divisions. There’ll also be a “representation division”, the goal of which “is to allow people to show off their acting skills as well as allow bought and commissioned cosplays to be able to enter”. Each division will have its own distinct marking sheet.
As for when the judging will take place at the show, here’s what GES has to say:
“All entrants, except the Skits Division, will be judged in the cosplay judging tent all day throughout Friday (5 October 2018), Saturday (6 October 2018) and the morning of Sunday (7 October 2018). An email will be sent out to all participants, confirming the judging times a week prior to the event.”
“The Skits Division judging takes place on the main stage on Sunday (7 October 2018) afternoon (15:00 to 16:00). An email will be sent out confirming the judging order for skits a week before the event.”
If you’re a cosplayer, a dedicated cosplay fan, or someone who’s wondering what a cosplay even is and has to find out RIGHT NOW (or at least sometime in the near future), be sure to get down to rAge this year. It’s happening from 5-7 October 2018. A day pass will cost you R150, while access to the show for all three days is R300.
