There are many dormant video game franchises which could do with a revival. Jagged Alliance sits about seven-eighths of the way down that list, right? Still, let’s not be cynical… the original Jagged Alliance and its core sequel were well worth a play, even if things got a little muddy from there on, so the promise of a new franchise entry should at least register as a strong bleep on your radar if you’re into tactical strategy.

There’s a new one on the horizon, it’s called Jagged Alliance: Rage, and it’s bringing the franchise out of retirement with guns a-blazing.

“Constantly on the brink of breakdown, faced with dehydration and no support from home, you lead a team of seasoned mercenaries against vastly outnumbering armed forces,” says the blurb on the game’s official page. Jagged Alliance: Rage is referred to as a spin-off, set 20 years after the first Jagged Alliance, sending your motley crew of mercenaries to an island controlled by a drug overlord and his army. Presumably to bring down his tyrannical drug-fueled reign, not to party hard and listen to psytrance.

Jagged Alliance always injected a dose of personality into its protagonists, and this one seems to keep the same tone, with each mercenary bringing his or her own set of skills and traits to the mix. I remember Jagged Alliance 2 as a kind of Commandos-meets-XCOM (sans aliens) experience back in 1999, and Jagged Alliance: Rage looks set to carry on with the same formula. Developer Cliffhanger Productions doesn’t have a lot on its resume, but there’s potential here if the team can capture the essence of the earlier Jagged Alliance releases.

Jagged Alliance: Rage will be landing in the spring on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
