Sony’s taking something called Project Mephisto to Gamescom

OOOOOH, BUT WHAT IS IT? Dunno, but that’s not stopping the internet from claiming it’s a new Diablo, some sort of PSVR thing, or… a port of an obscure indie game. To the Speculate-O-Tron!

Whatever it is, it’s on the list of Gamescom’s PS4 best of show nominees, next to Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man and Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. Intriguingly, however, there’s no developer or publisher info attached to the name.

The most obvious – and so almost definitely least probable – is that it’s a Diablo game. We already know that a new Diablo is already in the works with associate community manager Brandy “Nevalistis” Camel recently promising some news about the series “later this year”, so is Mephisto back with the Prime Evils for a sold-out world tour of Sanctuary to promote his next album, Haters Gonna Hate? Maybe. Maybe not, but I’m in for a Diablo 2 remake as a consolation prize.

What about PSVR? Its pre-announcement codename was “Project Morpheus”, and “Project Mephisto” is kind of similar? I mean, they both start with m, so.

Meanwhile over on EGMNow, one theory is that it’s a PS4 port of Nuke Nine’s 2014 roguelike platform Vagante, which was originally also a “Project Mephisto”. I vote nah, because it’s totally Knack 3. Or it isn’t.

Gamescom starts tomorrow, so I guess we’ll find out soon enough.
