There’s a new Samurai Shodown game on the way and I’ve just noticed for the first time since 1993 that it’s spelled “Shodown”

Surely it’s meant to be Showdown? You don’t just get to choose how words are spelled, okay, SNK? Anyway, so Samurai Shodown in making a comeback, revealed via a tasty teaser trailer, and they’ve honoured the franchise’s original Japanese naming convention by calling it Samurai Spirits.

SNK has once again chosen 3D models for the characters and environments, but, based on the teaser trailer, is sticking with a 2D plane for the combat. This is a Good Thing. If any of you are old enough to remember the early days of 3D gaming, when everyone felt compelled to make their fighting games “proper” 3D, it was a shambles. The direction that Samurai Spirits is taking is definitely a better option, and it’s looking quite impressive so far.

The teaser is just that – a teaser – so it doesn’t give away too much, but it does show off a few franchise veteran characters, as well as all the big hair and bigger swords you could ever wish for from a Samurai Shodown game.

Samurai Spirits is penciled in for a vague 2019 release.
