Are you watching Maniac?

Because you should be. Mashing up the trippy, unreliable narration of Legion, the corporate satire of the original Robocop, and the sentimental surrealism of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Netflix’s new must-binge TV series is a mesmerising excursion into the bizarre.

It is the future. Maybe. The show’s mix of neon sci-fi dystopia and retro 80s aesthetic makes it kind of hard to tell, but I guess that’s the point. Desperate for cash or the resolution of some existential crisis – or a combination of both, perhaps – our protagonists sign up for an experimental therapy trial at Neberdine Pharmaceutical and Biotech. Things get… weeeeeird.

Directed by True Detective psyche-wizard Cary Fukunaga, Maniac stars Jonah Hill and Emma Stone.
