Alright, so, there’s been a leak of a game that looks like it’s set in the Harry Potter universe. And it looks like this is the game that Avalanche Studios was working on in secret, based on job postings back in 2017 on Avalanche’s website. There’s a game description which was leaked from a survey that someone took about the game, and game footage of what clearly looks like an Unreal Engine-powered third-person action adventure. Before we get to the jump, though, I just have to get this out the way…
The leaked footage came from a survey that one Redditor took part in where people were taken into a viewing booth in a mall and shown the above trailer. The users were then quizzed on their impressions from the trailer and thoughts, and were then paid for their time. The first few frames show some sort of notification from a video player on the top-right, and the game overview is quite short. If you didn’t know what to look for, this could be anything. But the main points are quite revealing – the Great Hall, the walk through Hogsmeade, the location of the castle on the map, the spell names, and particularly the transfiguration classes. Any ardent Harry Potter fan would notice it immediately. Paris Games Week is only a month away, so this would be an ideal showcase for the game.
The video embedded above was also accompanied by a description of the game, which the same Redditor, /u/VapeThisBro, also posted in the same thread:

A Harry Potter game in the style of an RPG is, undoubtedly, on my list of things to play. While the game tie-ins to the films were somewhat enjoyable, they always fell short of the actual experience that I wanted from a Harry Potter game – which was not to be Harry Potter, but rather to explore the universe on my own, with my own character. I already knew where the story was going to go. Something like this, though… HELL YES.
During the trailer, we also get to see what kinds of things we could be doing in the game. You’re a fifth year student at Hogwarts, so this opens up more advanced classes to take including Herbology and Divination. We see the character in the game also go through lots of puzzles and obstacles in the game, so one hopes that there’s lots of stuff underneath Hogwarts and in the Forbidden Forest to explore. Argus Filch did once mention entire catacombs that existed under the castle, most of them sealed off by himself. The timing of the game, according to the leak, also puts us within range of the tail end of the Triwizard Tournament, which was abandoned just as the 1800s began because of a high death toll.
We also see some of the spells used in the game that you will presumably be able to learn – Lumos, Alohomora, Reparo, Expulso, Stupefy, Depulso, Levioso, and Expelliarmus make an appearance in the trailer, but the order in which they are set on the screen points to players being able to change their load order for spells so that you can change how your character is able to handle different situations. There’s also a straight-up murder in the trailer, so there’s that. That tinge at the end of the wand is unmistakably one of the Unforgivable Curses.
I did my waiting. Twelve years of it. Let me play this already.
