First Tracer, now Soldier 76. In case you haven’t noticed, Overwatch likes to flesh out its heroes with short stories and cinematics, insisting that there’s more to the game than just running around and shooting each other. Well, in the latest short story, Bastet, it turns out there’s a pretty good reason why Soldier 76 is such a grumpy grandad.
Bastet follows Ana, in Egypt, post destruction of the Swiss Overwatch headquarters. There, she encounters Jack “Soldier 76” Morrison and the reminiscing ensues. What’s got the internet all aflutter is on page 12, when Ana finds an old photo of Jack and ex-boyfriend, Vincent. Yes. Boyfriend. Specifically, the boy he gave up in order to keep fighting in the war.
“Vincent deserved a happier life than the one I could give him.” Jack sighed. “We both knew that I could never
put anything above my duty. Everything I fought for was to protect people like him… That’s the sacrifice I made.”
So there you go, you’d probably be a bit surly too if you chose war over love. Anyway, it’s canon now, deal with it. The internet certainly is:
but think about it: tracer was the ideal eye candy cover girl whose ass was used to sell copies and soldier 76 is the big, call of duty inspired macho man for all those who weren’t into british chicks. blizzard used traditional straight bait and then made that bait gay. genius.
