Potential spoilers for Netflix’s Bird Box ahead. If you’ve watched the film, and you probably have by now, all the cool kids have, you’ll know that it never shows us what the monsters look like. Turns out this was an even better decision than originally thought.
The mystery creatures in Bird Box make you kill yourself if you look at them, by showing you what you fear most. Other than via crazy Gary’s sketches, the viewer never actually gets to see what they look like so it’s all left up to your imagination. Well, apparently, the film’s producers thought we needed to actually see the creatures at some point, so one was designed and a scene was shot. In the film, Sandra Bullock plays Malorie, whose biggest fear is motherhood, and, speaking with Bloody Disgusting, she described meeting the creature on set for the first time:
“It was snake-like, and I was like, ‘I don’t want to see it when it first happens. Just bring it into the room. We’ll shoot the scene.’ I turn and he’s like this [growling at me.] It’s making me laugh. It was just a long fat baby.”
Needless to say, the scene was cut from the final edit for reasons of hilarity. While babies are scary for a multitude of reasons, it didn’t quite work this time. This was a pity for the creators who put a lot of effort into it, but not so much for the movie. Images of the creature were originally shared on Instagram, but have since been removed, possibly due to the negative reaction. This is a screenshot of the original post:
Bird Box is currently available to watch on Netflix so join the 26 million of us that already have, and give it a look.
