The 2018 Steam Awards will be a live-streamed event because reasons

Since 2016, Valve has hosted an annual, community-driven awards event on its Steam platform. In the past, Steam users nominated one game per provided category, these were reviewed by Valve, there was a second round of voting, and a list of winners was produced. Categories for previous years have included “Villain Most In Need Of A Hug”, “Choices Matter”, and “Haunts My Dreams”. The kind of light-hearted quirk we need in the world. Especially when dealing with awards that don’t actually matter.

Two things have changed for the 2018 edition, however. The categories are bland and make sense, and Steam is live streaming an actual awards show for the very first time.

The nominees for Steam’s “Game of the Year” are:

  • PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds
  • Monster Hunter: World
  • Kingdom Come: Deliverance
  • Hitman 2
  • Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

No, the games don’t actually have to have come out in 2018. Does this list make you feel things? Express those things with words.

For those of us down at the bottom of Africa, the Steam Awards take place 8 February 2019 at 20:00.
