Marvel dials its meta marketing up to 11 with the official Captain Marvel website

The Captain Marvel movie is embracing its period setting with some Deadpool-esque meta marketing. Visit the official Captain Marvel website and revel in some 90s internet culture that made me snort laugh. Alternatively, use it as a teaching aid, for the children, so that this dark time in internet aesthetic may never be repeated.

It’s no secret that Captain Marvel is set in the 1990s; beepers can only come from one time period and, also, Marvel said so. The film exists as a flashback episode to explain Captain Marvel conveniently flying to the rescue in Avengers: Endgame. I assume that’s what she’ll be doing. I hope they also explain where she’s been all this time and why nobody has mentioned her, like ever. I assume vision quest or time vortex.

Marvel have really gone all out on the website, though. It’s a pixelacious, gif-strewn, comic sans wonderland complete with animated WordArt . There’s even a pop-up old lady to punch. You need it in your life. It also actually works; hosting a bunch of information, the trailer, and links to buy tickets if you live in the US and can use that functionality.

Give it a visit and prepare to feel old or confused. Your experience is directly related to your decade of birth. Isn’t time fun?

Captain Marvel comes out 8 March 2019.
