REWIND THE WEEK: 18-22 February 2019

This is REWIND THE WEEK – your one-stop go-to much-wow guide for what’s hot, what’s not, and what’s even going on this week, every week, until the end of the universe. Which could be tomorrow, so don’t be the guy who missed out.

Local Apex Legends player Ruan van Vlient launches a petition to get South African servers for the game, with over 7000 people supporting this and one person (me) not. This is very controversial. In the meantime, though, Respawn has banned more than 16,000 not-so-Legends for cheating and presumably also hired a plumber to fix the leaks dribbling out of its studio, while Fast Travel Games deals with an awkward mix-up between the hero royale and its own game Apex Construct.

But not as awkward, perhaps, as YouTube mistaking Pokémon GO and Club Penguin videos for child porn and deleting them, Anthem’s broken quickplay matchmaking algorithms dropping low-level players in the game’s finale, or Nike’s self-lacing “smart” sneakers not working properly with Android devices and cancelling the future.

And definitely not as awkward as Bethesda banning Fallout 76’s most (only) dedicated player for having too much ammo.

The most awkward thing this week, however, must be a fake lawyer’s letter some kid sent to the US Copyright Office, demanding that the ongoing, “wreckless and baseless” Fortnite dance lawsuit be dismissed.

Marvel has cancelled its Netflix shows, but it doesn’t even matter because The Umbrella Academy is a much better superhero show anyway, and besides, the next season of Game of Thrones is out in April and everybody is or isn’t going to die so that’s more important.

Unlike Iron Fist, who is not important. Or even remotely interesting.

China is building a solar power station… in spaaaaace, France has decided to make lightsaber duelling a national sport, and the flat Earth documentary movie Behind the Curve proves that flat Earth conspiracy is fucking stupid.
