Taika Waititi set to direct Time Bandits TV series adaptation pilot

There’s a Time Bandits series in development and Taika Waititi (What We Do in the Shadows, Thor: Ragnarok) has joined the project to co-write and direct the pilot, so everything old is new again and the nostalgia wheel in the sky keeps on turning.

Time Bandits, directed, produced, and written by Terry Gilliam (Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Brazil, Twelve Monkeys amongst others), came out in 1981. For those of you that weren’t made to watch it by your mildly obsessed friend, it’s a fantasy film that revolves around a kid and his adventures with a band of time-travelling dwarfs, but it’s also about escaping the arbitrarily-imposed shackles of society, because Gilliam. It’s a little mental and Waititi is pretty much perfect for it.

Post-Ragnarok, Waititi is riding high with an upcoming What We Do in the Shadows TV adaptation for FX and his Star Wars original series, The Mandalorian, for Disney+, amongst a number of other projects. Time Bandits is being made for Apple TV.

Taika Waititi will also be an executive producer for the series, alongside Terry Gilliam. There is no release date yet as the series is still in development.
