Avengers: Endgame banks $1.2 billion in its opening weekend

Disney and Marvel’s new superhero-’em-up has Hulk-smashed box office records, cashing in an estimated $1.2 billion from about 100 million viewers globally since its Wednesday pre-screening debut. It’s the first movie ever to make over $1 billion in its opening weekend, and busts even the franchise’s own previous record opening weekend of $630 million with Avengers: Infinity War.

Industry analysts were sceptical when Disney acquired Marvel in 2009 for $4.2 billion, but apparently they underestimated the market value of a sassy raccoon in a jumpsuit. Between the Avengers movies, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and other Marvel Cinematic Universe properties, the franchise is now worth over $20 billion.
