During the Nintendo E3 Treehouse Live showcase, game producer Junichi Masuda and game director Shigeru Ohmori broke the hearts of fans by announcing that Pokémon Sword and Shield will only support transfers for Pokémon that can be found in the Galar region’s Pokédex – you can catch ’em all, but you can’t catch ’em all.
“Now we’re well over 800 Pokémon species in the games, at Game Freak we really spent a lot of time thinking about what the best way to move forward was – really preserving the quality of all the different Pokémon, while also taking into account the battle balance of having so many different Pokémon available” said Masuda, with the help of a translator.
Essentially, the argument was that a focus on giving individual Pokémon memorably unique animations and traits, while also preserving the balance of the game’s competitive nature was necessary. Fans were extremely upset, going as far as to demand that the game be delayed until support for all Pokémon species is added to the installment.
The anger is understandable, but making that kind of demand is somewhat unrealistic, especially considering that we still don’t know the full scale of the Galar region – there could be hundreds of undiscovered Pokémon in there. On the plus side, the change still won’t stop anyone from being the very best that no one ever was.
