Cyberpunk 2077 seems to be following in Mass Effect’s footsteps by letting you choose a backstory for your character instead of plonking you into the world with convenient amnesia.
I mean, the character backstory is a mainstay of tabletop RPGs, like the one Cyberpunk 2077 is based on, but Mass Effect is one of the few video games to employ the technique and have it affect your options; not a lot, but they tried. In Cyberpunk 2077, your chosen “Lifepath” influences your starter location, how people interact with you, and I assume other things we won’t know about until we actually play it.
You will have three Lifepath options to choose from, when you begin the game: Nomad, Corpo, or Street Kid. Each Lifepath has its own set of backstory options you can customise relating to your childhood hero, a key life event, and why you feel the need to be in Night City.
I foresee a statistically unsound number of players with Johnny Silverhand as their childhood hero and I kinda feel bad for the other options, because they’re not Keanu Reeves. Unless CD Projekt Red is hiding a bunch more celebrities back there.
