Amazon Game Studios has announced that they’re developing a free-to-play Lord of the Rings MMO, set long before the events of The Lord of the Rings, but it’s totally not the same as the TV series that is also set long before the events of The Lord of the Rings.
In partnership with Leyou (a video game holding company that used to be chicken supplier but now owns Warframe developer, Digital Extremes), the new LOTR MMO is set long before The Lord of the Rings and will explore “lands, people, and creatures never seen before by fans of the Tolkien universe”. I hope they will have been read about by fans of the Tolkien universe, at least. If it sounds awfully similar to Amazon’s upcoming LOTR TV series, it is, but Amazon says they’re being developed completely separately. Prepare for future confusion, not unlike that Marvel’s Avengers situation.
No release date for the game has been set yet, but it will be playable on PC and consoles. The TV series you’re going to associate it with is meant to come out in 2021.
