It’s been around 14 years since Psychonauts came out, so some might say the sequel is already long overdue and, now, even more so, according to yesterday’s blog post by Double Fine Productions. No Psychonauts 2 this year, sorry.
Double Fine announced the delay in an update post on Fig (like Kickstarter for game publishing), saying that the Psychonauts 2 release date has been pushed into 2020. When next year? Probably in one of the months, they didn’t give specifics. They just want the game to be the best it can be. This isn’t the first time the sequel’s release has been delayed, since it was originally set for a 2018 launch.
Aside from news of the delay, Double Fine also repeated the E3 announcement that they’ve joined Xbox Games Studios and Psychonauts 2 will now be published by Microsoft instead of Starbreeze. They swiftly allayed any fears that this meant a PlayStation 4 release was off the table. Psychonauts 2 will still get a PS4 release, so calm down.
Double Fine also suggested that their partnership with Microsoft will have pretty much zero noticeable influence on the game “at least not for a while…” which seems unnecessarily ominous.
