Remember when Paramount Pictures revealed Sonic’s designs for their new Sonic the Hedgehog movie? Everything about it was wrong, and I’m not going to lie, that design was legit the stuff of nightmares. After intense backlash from fans worldwide, the studio delayed the movie’s release to atone for their past mistakes by remaking the whole design. And now, months later, Sonic’s new look is complete – gotta fix fast.
In an interview with Variety, producer Tim Miller confirmed his satisfaction and confidence with the new design, stating “I think fans will be pleased.” Hopefully, we can take his word for it and get a fresh concept that’s less terrible and closer to the source material. He also shared his and director Jeff Fowler’s thoughts on the negative comments the studio received the day the original design was shown. “Look, I was with fans and so was Jeff. When the s–t hit the fan, I went over there and said, ‘The most important thing to do, man, is say, I f–ked up,'” Miller said – his honesty is appreciated.
Nightmare fuel and awkward renditions of Coolio’s “Gangsta’s Paradise” aside, Sonic the Hedgehog releases on 14 February 2020. If anything, the Valentine’s Day vibes might help curb our anger ever so slightly.
