Gearbox recently posted an event teaser on Twitter that asks us all to join them for a “Celebration of Togetherness”. Some people took this to mean a reference to cross-play, but that’s not it at all. What’s it actually about? We’ll all find out later today.
Gearbox’s Randy Pitchford had to step in to quell speculation that today’s event refers to cross-play for Borderlands 3. In doing so, he confirmed that Borderlands 3 will not launch with cross-play functionality, but it will be supported at a later date.
We are committed to cross-play on as many platforms as possible.
So, there will be cross-play, just not from the very start. That’s something. Like its predecessors, Borderlands 3 will include four person multiplayer, so cross-play will be pretty glorious.
The Celebration of Togetherness will take place at 16:00 SAST today and Pitchford promises it’ll be “awesome”. He probably has to say that, though.
Borderlands 3 is set for release on PC, XBox One, and PlayStation 4 on 13 September.
