Unless that’s what you’re into. Retsuko the relatable red panda with rage issues will be back for a third season on Netflix.
You’d be forgiven for assuming that an anime about a Sanrio character would be just another dumb, kawaii thing for children and tweens, since they’re best known for the marketing juggernaut that is Hello Kitty, but Aggretsuko is taking on the patriarchy via the most adorable means possible.
Retsuko is a soft-spoken, 20-something, Japanese red panda surviving her uninspiring office job, literal pig of a boss, and obnoxious co-workers by venting her frustration through late-night death metal karaoke. The premise alone is fun, but what makes Aggretsuko special is its relatable commentary on the everyday experiences of women in the workplace and the world in general, even though the series is based on Japan’s cultural norms.
I’m glad we’re getting a third season, but I’m not sure what it will be about as Retsuko has done a lot of growing up over the first two. Even the show’s director isn’t sure what’s left to say. That being said, I don’t think we’ll be running out of societal nonsense any time soon so there’s plenty of material to work with.
