At $33,022,403 and climbing, Dota 2’s annual tournament, The International, now has the largest esports prize pool, ever.
Held every year, since 2011, The International is a Dota 2 championship tournament, hosted by Valve. The prize money keeps going up because 25% of proceeds from sales of the Battle Pass go directly to the prize pool. First prize is currently sitting at $15,025,193 (over R231 million). The Fortnite World Cup, which took place in July, previously held the esports prize pool record with $30 million and is, apparently, now holding Dota 2’s beer.
The International 2019 sees 18 teams from Europe, North America, South America, and Asia battling for dominance over a series of best-of-two matches. Only 16 will make it into the Main Event and that number will be whittled away as the tournament progresses.
The International Main Event will take place in Shanghai, China, from 20 – 25 August and you can watch it on Twitch or SteamTV.
