More than likely, your experience of the cult classic Metro 2033 world has come from the game series, the latest of which being Metro Exodus, which came out earlier this year. Metro 2033 takes place in post-apocalyptic Moscow, where survivors of a global nuclear war took refuge in the underground train system. It’s pretty much made to be a movie.
The original novel, by Russian author Dmitry Glukhovksy, has already been adapted and expanded upon through several video games, a series of short stories and novels by various authors, a graphic novel, and a board game. TV or film was the next, inevitable step and Glukhovsky has been turning down offers for the past 10 years.
In Russia, I didn’t see any producers who could make a good [screen adaptation of] this book. It just seemed impossible. But now I finally met a team that I can entrust ‘Metro’ with. Our ambitions turned out to be similar: to create a world-class blockbuster and stun even those who have read the trilogy and know it by heart.
There’s no news on a director or cast yet, but Glukhovsky will be involved as a creative producer.
This doesn’t really count as a game-to-movie adaptation, since they’re adapting the books, like Netflix is doing with the Witcher series, so hopefully it should be safe from the curse.
The Metro 2033 movie is set for release in January 2022.
