Because they can’t just reuse current Nic Cage, so who else can channel that level of crazy? Who, amongst us, has that power?
John Woo’s Face/Off (1997) is probably the best film about two men exchanging faces that you’re ever going to see. Also, it’s just a pretty great film. John Travolta stars as FBI agent Sean Archer opposite Nicolas Cage as his terrorist nemesis, Castor Troy. For completely reasonable reasons, involving bombs, they end up swapping faces and action shenanigans ensue. Also, doves.
Now, like all good things, it’s getting a reboot. Face/Off Again (not its real title) will be written by Oren Uziel, whose previous writing credits include The Cloverfield Paradox, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Detective Pikachu. So, yeah… Neal Moritz (Preacher, The Boys, all the Fast and the Furiouseses) is the producer, but there’s no word on who will direct nor who will replace Travolta and Cage.
I have a suspicion that the glory of Face/Off is very much tied to the performances of its lead actors, making it unlikely that a reboot will be as good, but you never know.
