In a recent IGN interview, Overwatch director Jeff Kaplan was asked whether he would be interested in seeing any of Overwatch’s characters transitioning over to Smash Bros. Ultimate, especially seeing as the last of the game’s secret and DLC characters have not been revealed yet. His answer was an emphatic response that Nintendo use “whatever character” they want in their latest mascot fighter.
“To the Smash Bros. team, whatever character you want, we love them all. They’re all our babies, you can have any single one of them,” he says. “We have 31 to choose from.” However, when pressed, he gave the more predictable answer that Smash Bros. should use Tracer seeing as she is Overwatch’s mascot and all, or Doomfist seeing as his abilities would transition well into a fighting game.
The Tracer sentiment was further echoed by Wes Yanagi, producer for the Switch version of Overwatch, but he also said that he’d love to see Winston find his way into the roster. However, all of this is purely speculative. Some may hope that Tracer, or someone else, finds their way into Smash Bros. but unless this is some kind of an elaborate marketing stunt it’s probably safe to assume that the devs are just saying things because devs happen to be people who sometimes say things. So we probably shouldn’t read too much into it. Unless of course Nintendo decides to take them up on the offer, and with Nintendo being Nintendo that’s always a possibility.
