Hinterland has finally released Chapter Three of The Long Dark’s Wintermute story mode, so it’s time to come down off Jackrabbit Island and embrace the narrative once more.
Crossroads Elegy is the third of five story chapters planned for The Long Dark. Where the first two followed pilot Mackenzie’s search for Astrid after his plane crashes in the mysterious aurora event, Chapter Three tells Astrid’s side of the story. After being rescued from near-death in Pleasant Valley, Astrid must use her doctoring skills to help other survivors of the Quiet Apocalypse while searching for Mackenzie and answers about what exactly is going on. Also, there are timber wolves now.
You don’t have to have completed the previous chapters to play this one, but it’s recommended.
Since this update required an overhaul of the Pleasant Valley map, any loot you left there, that was in an updated area, will appear in a Lost & Found box. This will happen any time the developers have to make major changes to a map. The console version has also received some visual enhancements for those playing on the Xbox One X, Xbox One S, PS4, and PS4 Pro, including HDR lighting and high resolution support.
For those of you more interested in Survival Mode, it’ll be getting some updates, including timber wolves, in December. The Four Days of Night Halloween event will also be running again from 07:00 SAST on 28 October until 1 November.
The Long Dark – Episode Three: Crossroads Elegy is currently available to play on PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. It’s about a 9GB update on the Xbox One.
