The Star Wars feature film trilogy, that had been planned between Disney and Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, is not happening and it doesn’t even have anything to do with the GoT finale.
Nor is it related to Solo’s lacklustre performance at the box office or the Star Wars oversaturation situation. Actually, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss just don’t have the time after signing a $200 million, multiyear film and TV deal with Netflix. So, the Disney deal is off.
There are only so many hours in the day, and we felt we could not do justice to both Star Wars and our Netflix projects.
This isn’t much of a loss, really, we’re not running out of Star Wars content any time soon. There’s the final season of the animated Star Wars Resistance series, then The Mandalorian is coming in November, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in December, whatever Star Wars movie Marvel’s Kevin Feige is working on, and yet another film trilogy supposedly in the works with Rian Johnson (Star Wars: The Last Jedi).
