What if your reality was a GTA game? And you weren’t even the protagonist, but instead one of the random, unimportant victims of constant violence, generated by code to be erased in a vehicle collision or a gang war or a bank robbery. Over and over and over, forever, an existential loop of meaningless misery for XP. This is the premise of Free Guy.
Ryan Reynolds is Guy, a bank teller just trying to do his job in a world of non-stop chaos and murder.
“Do you ever think there has to be more? Being shot at, run over, taken hostage?” he asks a friend. “Today’s gonna be different.”
The movie co-stars Jodie Comer, Taika Waititi, Joe Keery, Lil Rel Howery, Channing Tatum, and Utkarsh Ambudkar, and opens in July 2020.
