Parasite is the first non-English movie to win Best Picture at the Oscars

Subverting expectations of an industry monopolised by boring and predictable white people dramas, Korean director Bong Joon-ho has made Hollywood history – beating out Joker, The Irishman, 1917, and other hot contenders to take home the show’s most prestigious award for his class-versus-capitalism black comedy.

Parasite is one of only 11 foreign language films previously nominated in the Best Picture category, and the first ever to actually win. And besides Best Picture, the movie also blagged trophies for Best Screenplay, Best Director, and Best International Feature Film, so that’s provocative. Bong Joon-ho’s previous credits include the cult-classic post-apocalypse-’em-up Snowpiercer and Netflix’s adorably bizarre Okja.
