The Outriders gameplay reveal happened last night and I, for one, am looking forward to mounting monster heads on my hub truck.
Outriders is a dark and brutal (People Can Fly’s description) 3rd person, sci-fi, RPG shooter set on Enoch, a planet humans are trying to colonise after they, I assume, ruined Earth for everyone. So far, its feeling a lot like Mass Effect Destiny Gears and I see nothing wrong with that.
This is an RPG, so you get to create your own character, work your way through a branching, intertwined, skill tree, and make good life choices, or bad ones, because it seems that everyone in the game, including you, is morally ambiguous. There are also four classes to pick from: Pyromancer, Trickster, Devastator, and a mystery one they haven’t talked about yet, all with their own, unique, implementations of badassery.
If you play co-op, you’ll be travelling in a literal convoy of customisable murder trucks as you adventure across the (not open-world) planet, searching for the origins of the mystery signal, which is very important, for story reasons. Playing with your friends doesn’t mean you’re a sidekick, either, each player experiences the story from their point of view, with their co-op buddies along for the ride. It’s not clear if you’ll be able to jump in and out of a friend’s game or what happens if you’re all different levels, but I guess we’ll find out at some point.
Sure, the graphics don’t always look amazing, but this is pre-release footage. We can give it a proper judgement when it comes out towards the end of the year.
For now, I’m quietly optimistic. What do you think the fourth class will be? I’m holding thumbs for weaponised charisma.
