S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 is real, with a trailer to prove it

First announced back in 2018 – if you count a Facebook post and an almost completely empty website as “announced” – GSC Game World’s sequel made its video debut with an appropriately bleak trailer during the Xbox Games Showcase event last night.

The new trailer doesn’t tell us much about STALKER 2 except that it’s launching on Xbox Series X and PC (including Game Pass) and features the same creepy Soviet post-apocalyptic wasteland as previous games in the series, but now with some extra next-gen glam. A website update adds that the game is a “unique blend of FPS, immersive sim and horror” with “an epic, non-linear story”, but the studio isn’t committing to a launch date for now.

GSC Game World has a kind of controversial history, starting work on STALKER 2 in 2009 – and subsequently cancelling the project, firing most of its employees, and closing up shop in 2011, citing CEO Sergiy Grygorovych’s “personal reasons”. The Ukranian studio re-opened in 2014, and has since released Cossacks 3 to mixed reviews.
