2020, you glorious bastard, now you come to us with a film in which Nicolas Cage plays some sort of fight-master mentor to a band of warriors chosen to battle a Predator-like alien visitor, that’s on its regularly-scheduled beat down vacation to Earth. Or at least die well enough that said alien doesn’t decide to go on a murder spree of dissatisfaction. Just go with it.
You can’t fight crazy.
Nor should you, Mr. Cage, nor should you.
Directed by Kickboxer: Retaliation’s Dimitri Logothetis, Jiu Jitsu also features Alain Moussi (V-Wars), Frank Grillo (Billions), Rick Yune (Olympus Has Fallen), Marie Avgeropoulos (The 100), Juju Chan (Wu Assassins), and Tony “don’t touch my elephant” Jaa.
Despite it being called Jiu Jitsu, I didn’t actually spot any jiu-jitsu in the trailer. There was a lot of muay thai, kickboxing, and sword fights, but no jiu-jitsu, because I guess it’s just a cool set of words and this is a film about Nic Cage training people to fight an alien. So, manage your expectations. I’m going to watch it just for Tony Jaa’s iconic jump-knees.
