If the name Jordan Weisman rings a bell, you might want to grab your reading glasses, take your daily vitamins, and settle into that ergonomic chair – this news is going to be worth it. Why, you ask? Well, the legendary designer behind BattleTech, Shadowrun, Crimson Skies, and a treasure trove of other gaming classics is back, and this time, he’s got a swashbuckling adventure up his sleeve.
Jordan Weisman has teamed up with Zach Weisman to launch a Kickstarter for their new PC game, Sea of Legends. Based on an earlier crowdfunded tabletop game, this project promises to be a genre-blending, open-world, deck-building RPG that might blow your pirate peg leg off.
The Kickstarter is live until the 14th of November, and from what we’ve seen so far, it promises all the elements you’d want from a pirate adventure. There are tactical ship battles, deck-building strategy, a crew of lovable rogues, and even a romance system where you can woo the sons or daughters of local governors.
And really, who doesn’t want to sail the seven seas and sweep someone off their feet in the process? The gameplay itself consists of tactical, deck-to-deck battles on an isometric grid. You’ll be slinging cards to take actions, all while commanding a rascally crew ready to follow you into battle.
Each crew member has their own deck and quests, so the more you play, the more your deck grows into a true pirate’s arsenal. And let’s be honest, the essence of good pirating is plundering, and this game delivers. From trade ships to Spanish black ships brimming with gold, the seas are full of opportunities for a daring pirate like yourself.
You’ll be looting, upgrading your ship, hiring crew, and collecting magical items on your quest to become Pirate King – or Queen if that’s your fancy.
Jordan Weisman’s track record with Kickstarter is also as solid as a well-built galleon. His past projects, like Shadowrun Returns and Shadowrun: Hong Kong, sailed through with flying colours, so there’s every reason to believe Sea of Legends will follow suit. After all, this guy knows how to crowdfund like a seasoned pirate knows how to find buried treasure.
Whether Sea of Legends scratches that eternal pirate itch remains to be seen, but if your compass points toward adventure, you can check out the Kickstarter and maybe toss a few gold coins their way.
